Albuterol Syrup Side Effects: An Introduction
As with any medicine, there are possible side effects with
albuterol syrup (
albuterol sulfate); however, not everyone who takes
albuterol syrup will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate albuterol syrup well. When side effects do occur, in most cases they are minor and either require no treatment or can be easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with albuterol syrup. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of albuterol syrup side effects with you.)
Common Albuterol Syrup Side Effects
Albuterol syrup has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials in which a group of people taking the drug have side effects documented and compared to another group not taking the medicine. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
In these studies, the most common albuterol syrup side effects in adults and children age 6 to 14 included:
- Shakiness (tremor) -- in up to 10 percent of people
- Nervousness -- up to 9 percent
- Headaches -- up to 4 percent
- Dizziness -- up to 3 percent
- Increased appetite -- up to 3 percent
- Hyperactivity -- up to 2 percent
- Excitement -- up to 2 percent
- Insomnia -- up to 1 percent
- Bloody nose -- up to 1 percent.
Common side effects in younger children (age two through six) included:
- Excitement -- in up to 20 percent of children
- Nervousness -- up to 15 percent
- Increased muscle activity -- up to 4 percent
- Insomnia -- up to 2 percent
- Fast heart rate (tachycardia) -- up to 2 percent
- Loss of appetite -- up to 1 percent
- Conjunctivitis ("pinkeye") -- up to 1 percent
- Pale skin -- up to 1 percent.
