Atrovent HFA Uses (Cont.)

How Does Atrovent HFA Work?

As mentioned, Atrovent HFA belongs to a group of medications known as anticholinergics or antimuscarinics. By binding to specific receptors in the airway, called muscarinic receptors, Atrovent HFA helps to relax the smooth muscle of the airway.

Atrovent HFA uses an environmentally friendly hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) propellant. This replaces the older Atrovent inhaler (which is no longer available) that contained CFCs (chlorofluoroalkanes), substances that deplete the ozone layer.

Atrovent HFA Uses in Children

Atrovent HFA is not approved for use in children. Be sure to talk to your healthcare provider about using the medication in children.

Off-Label Atrovent HFA Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Atrovent HFA for treating something other than COPD. Using the drug to treat asthma is considered an off-label use of the inhaler.
