Arcapta Medication Information

A healthcare provider may prescribe ArcaptaTM (indacaterol maleate) to prevent airway spasms in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Although this medicine comes in capsule form, it is not swallowed. The capsule is put into an Arcapta Neohaler™, which punctures the capsule and releases a powder that you inhale using your own breath.

This medicine is a type of beta agonist. It works by stimulating beta receptors in the body, including those on the muscles around the airways. This stimulation causes the muscles to relax, which opens up the airways and allows more air to get into and through the lungs. This can help prevent airway spasms (this drug is not meant to treat a spasm that has already started).

Before beginning treatment with Arcapta, make sure to review the medication's safety information with your healthcare provider. For example, you may not be able to use this product if you have certain allergies, heart disease, or high blood pressure. Also, this drug may react with certain other medications.
