The most common side effects of Atrovent HFA include upper respiratory tract infections, sinus infections, and bladder infections. Other common side effects include back pain, headaches, and dizziness. Although most Atrovent HFA side effects are minor, some may require immediate medical attention. Contact your healthcare provider right away if you experience an irregular heart rhythm or vision changes while using the drug.
Atrovent HFA Side Effects: An IntroductionAs with any medicine, side effects are possible with Atrovent® HFA (ipratropium HFA inhaler). However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Atrovent HFA Side EffectsAtrovent HFA has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials, in which the side effects of a group of people taking the drug are documented and compared to another group not taking the medicine. As a result, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
In these studies, the most common side effects of Atrovent HFA included:
- Upper respiratory infections (such as the common cold) -- in up to 34 percent of people
- Worsening of COPD -- up to 23 percent
- Bronchitis -- up to 23 percent
- Sinus infections -- up to 11 percent
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs or bladder infections) -- up to 10 percent.
Other common Atrovent HFA side effects (occurring in 3 to 9 percent of people) included:
- Back pain
- Flu-like symptoms (such as a fever, chills, or body aches)
- Heartburn or indigestion
- Dry mouth
- Chest pain
- Stuffy or runny nose.
