COPD Home > Spiriva HandiHaler --Drug Information

If you have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), you may benefit from the prescription drug Spiriva® (tiotropium bromide). Spiriva capsules are not meant to be swallowed -- instead, they are used in the Spiriva HandiHaler®. This device punctures the capsule, and then the powder is inhaled using your own breath. The medication is inhaled into the lungs once a day.

To minimize risks while using the Spiriva HandiHaler, make sure your healthcare provider has a current list of any other drugs you are taking, including nonprescription products, as well as up-to-date information on your medical history. Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. You can take Spiriva at any time of the day, as long as you take it at the same time each day.

(Click Spiriva for more information on this inhaled drug, including possible side effects, in-depth dosing guidelines, and how it works.)
