Generic Perforomist

Perforomist (formoterol solution) is currently under the protection of patents that prevents any generic version of the drug from being manufactured in the United States. The earliest date that a generic Perforomist product could become available is in June 2021, when the first patent expires. However, other things could come up that may extend this date past 2021, such as lawsuits.

Generic Perforomist: An Overview

Perforomist™ (formoterol solution) is a prescription medication used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is part of a class of medications known as beta-adrenergic receptor agonists, or beta agonists for short.

Perforomist is manufactured by DEY, L.P. It is currently under the protection of a patent that prevents any generic Perforomist from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will Generic Perforomist Be Available?

The first patent for Perforomist currently expires in June 2021. This is the earliest date that a generic version of Perforomist could become available. However, there are other circumstances that could come up to extend the exclusivity period of Perforomist beyond 2021. This could include things such as other patents for specific Perforomist uses or lawsuits. Once Perforomist goes off patent, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Perforomist drug.

Is Formoterol a Generic Perforomist?

No -- formoterol is the active ingredient in Perforomist (and in several other medications as well), but it is not a generic version of Perforomist. What can be confusing is that, oftentimes, the active ingredient of a drug is referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off patent, and another company (besides the original manufacturer) would then make the product.
