Perforomist Warnings and Precautions

It is important to review the potential risks before taking Perforomist. Warnings and precautions of the medication include the risk of Perforomist having a stimulatory effect on your heart and blood pressure, and the possibility that the drug can make certain conditions (such as diabetes and epilepsy) worse. To help avoid these complications, be sure to talk to your healthcare provider about the warnings that apply to you.

 

Perforomist: What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking Perforomist™ (formoterol solution) if you have:
 
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are:
 
  • Pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
  • Breastfeeding.
     
Make sure to tell your healthcare provider about any other medicines you are taking, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
 

Some Perforomist Warnings and Precautions

Some of the warnings and precautions to be aware of with Perforomist include the following:
 
  • Tell your healthcare provider immediately if you are using Perforomist more often than usual. Breathing problems can get worse very quickly and can become a medical emergency.
     
  • Rarely, Perforomist can make bronchospasms (spasms of the airways) worse, which is exactly the opposite of what should happen. Tell your healthcare provider immediately if Perforomist makes your symptoms worse.
     
  • Perforomist is not intended for quick relief of breathing problems (especially in emergency situations). In these instances, a "rescue inhaler" (such as albuterol) should be used.
     
  • Perforomist can have a stimulatory effect on the heart and blood pressure, which can result in a fast heart rate (tachycardia), high blood pressure (hypertension), or an irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia). If you have heart disease or high blood pressure, make sure your healthcare provider is aware of it. He or she may wish to use particular caution if he or she recommends Perforomist in your case.
     
  • People who have an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), diabetes, or epilepsy should use caution when using Perforomist, as the medication can make these conditions worse or increase the risk of side effects.
     
  • Perforomist can cause low blood potassium (hypokalemia).
     
  • Perforomist can interact with other medications (see Perforomist Drug Interactions).
     
  • Perforomist is considered a pregnancy Category C medication. This means that Perforomist may not be safe to use during pregnancy. Talk to your healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using Perforomist during pregnancy (see Perforomist and Pregnancy for more information).
     
  • It is not known if Perforomist passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or plan to start breastfeeding, be sure to talk with your healthcare provider about using Perforomist (see Perforomist and Breastfeeding for more information).
