Spiriva® (tiotropium bromide) is a prescription medication used to prevent airway spasms (called bronchospasms) caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The medication is inhaled into the lungs once a day. Spiriva comes in capsule form, although these capsules are never to be swallowed. They are used in the Spiriva HandiHaler®. This device punctures the capsule, and then the powder is inhaled using your own breath. Some of the common side effects seen with this drug include sinus infections, upper respiratory tract infections, and a dry mouth.
