Benefits of Terbutaline

Terbutaline sulfate (Brethine®) is a prescription drug used to treat asthma and emphysema. The brand-name form is no longer available; however, generic forms are. The medication comes in tablet form and is typically taken three times a day. People with asthma benefit from terbutaline because of its action on muscles around the airways and on mast cells in the lungs.
Not everyone will find terbutaline beneficial, however. People with certain medical conditions, such as high blood pressure, irregular heart rhythm, and epilepsy may need a different asthma medication. In addition, this drug is not approved for children under the age of 12. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding also may not be able to take it.
