While there is no
asthma cure, the condition can be controlled. There are many different
asthma treatments, including fast-acting "rescue medications" for treating an
asthma attack and longer-acting "controller medications" used to prevent attacks.
Terbutaline sulfate (
Brethine®) is considered a controller medication because it does not work rapidly.
Terbutaline tablets come in two strengths (2.5 mg and 5 mg) and are generally taken three times a day. Everyone who takes terbutaline for asthma should also have a rescue medication (such as an
albuterol inhaler) available for emergencies.
For adolescents ages 12 to 15, the recommended dose of terbutaline is 2.5 mg three times daily. The 5-mg tablets are recommended for people age 16 and older.
