If you have
asthma, your healthcare provider may recommend a "controller" medication called terbutaline sulfate (
Brethine®). This oral drug is also approved to treat
emphysema. On occasion, a healthcare provider may recommend terbutaline for something other than treating asthma or emphysema, such as treating preterm labor. This is called an "
off-label use."
The medicine comes in tablet form and is usually taken three times a day. Although it is generally well tolerated, side effects are possible. The most common side effects reported in clinical studies included shakiness, nervousness, and drowsiness.
