Terbutaline Risks

Terbutaline sulfate (Brethine^®) is generally a safe and effective medication. However, it is not the best choice for every situation. For example, this product may have a stimulatory effect on the heart and blood pressure in some people, which can lead to symptoms like a fast heart rate, high or low blood pressure, and irregular heart rhythms.

To reduce your risk of terbutaline problems, tell your healthcare provider before starting treatment if you have any of the following:

High blood pressure (hypertension)
A fast heart rate (tachycardia)
An irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
Other types of heart disease, including congestive heart failure
An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
Seizures or epilepsy
Diabetes.

Also, let your healthcare provider know if you have any allergies; are taking any other medications; or are pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding.
