How to Use Theophylline
Theophylline is a prescription medication used to treat bronchospasms associated with asthma as well as various types of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Brand names include Uniphyl®, Theocron®, and TheoCap®. Because there are different forms of theophylline, how you use it will depend on the particular product being used, your age, and other factors.
It can be difficult to find the dose of theophylline that works best for each individual. Obviously, too little, and the drug is not effective; however, too much theophylline can lead to toxicity and potentially dangerous side effects. It can take several days -- even weeks -- to find the optimal dose. To make sure you are taking the correct amount, follow your healthcare provider's dosing guidelines exactly and tell him or her if you miss any doses or take extra doses.
