In general, most people can take the prescription drug
theophylline (a few brand names include Uniphyl
®, Theocron
®, and TheoCap
®) without any problems. However, there are some risks with theophylline that you should know about before beginning treatment. Side effects, for example, are possible. Common ones include
insomnia,
headaches, and nausea. Fortunately, these are usually mild and easily treated -- if they even occur at all.
However, theophylline presents a higher risk of side effects in people with certain medical conditions, such as liver or kidney disease,
congestive heart failure, or
epilepsy. In addition, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding may need to take a different medication altogether.
To help ensure that theophylline is the right medicine for you, tell your healthcare provider about any other drugs you are taking (including vitamins and supplements) and any other medical conditions you have.
