Theophylline Strengths

Many different theophylline products are available, and most are not equivalent to each other. There are short-acting and long-acting tablets and capsules, as well as a theophylline elixir. An injectable form of the medication is also available.

Along with many different generic products, the following brand-name theophylline medications are available:

  • Uniphyl® extended-release tablets
  • Theocron® extended-release tablets
  • TheoCap® extended-release capsules
  • Theo-24® extended-release capsules
  • Elixophyllin® elixir.

When determining the type and strength of theophylline that is right for you, your doctor will consider:

  • Your age
  • Other medications you are taking
  • Other medical conditions you may have.

Your healthcare provider may also need to monitor the level of theophylline in your blood for days or weeks before determining an appropriate dosage for you. This is because high levels of theophylline can cause toxicity and dangerous side effects, and some people may clear the drug from their systems more quickly or more slowly than average.
