Tudorza and Pregnancy

When Tudorza (aclidinium) was given to pregnant animals, it appeared to increase the risk for low fetal weights and liver abnormalities. Because of these risks, it is classified as a pregnancy Category C medication. However, if the benefits outweigh the risks in some situations, a healthcare provider may recommend that a woman use Tudorza during pregnancy.

Can Pregnant Women Use Tudorza?

Tudorza™ Pressair™ (aclidinium bromide) is a prescription medication used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It may not be safe for women who are pregnant. In animal studies that looked at the effects of Tudorza during pregnancy, the drug caused certain problems.

What Is Pregnancy Category C?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Tudorza is classified as a pregnancy Category C medication.

Pregnancy Category C is given to medicines that have not been adequately studied in pregnant humans but do appear to cause fetal harm in animal studies. In addition, medicines that have not been studied in any pregnant women or animals are automatically given a pregnancy Category C rating.

Tudorza was given a pregnancy Category C rating because of problems seen in animal studies. When given to pregnant rats, this drug increased the risk for low fetal weights. When given to pregnant rabbits at exceptionally high doses, it increased the risk for low fetal weights and liver abnormalities.

However, it is important to note that animals do not always respond to medicines in the same way that humans do. A pregnancy Category C medicine may be given to a pregnant woman if her healthcare provider believes that the benefits to the woman outweigh any possible risks to her unborn child. Because medications like Tudorza can be essential for people with breathing problems, a healthcare provider may sometimes recommend taking Tudorza during pregnancy.
